Self-structure

How an organised self may shape what becomes salient, attended to and believed.

REL.36 May 2026exploringexploratory

Self-structure, as I am using it here, is the relatively stable organisation and weighting of a person's self-conceptions, commitments, values and orientations.

The careless version of this claim is that identity determines perception. I do not want to make that claim — it is wider than anything I can support. The more careful question is narrower and more interesting: how might an organised self influence what becomes meaningful, what becomes salient, what gets attended to, how it is interpreted, and what is eventually believed?

Why the narrowing matters

Do not introduce an explanation when an existing one already does the work, and do not make a claim wider than the evidence allows. Narrowing an argument usually makes it stronger. That is a working method as much as a position.
