Can awareness exist without self-description? Does a newborn require conceptual awareness to be conscious? What would actually have to be shown before we were entitled to call a system conscious?
I am interested in the structure of the reasoning here more than in reaching a verdict. Confident answers in this area tend to be answers to an easier question than the one asked.
